The present study attempts to construct from the available historical documents a comprehensive overview of Palmer's life history and system of religious thought and to critically analyze both in order to identify the influences which shaped her and her religious outlook, as well as clarify the multifaceted nature of her impact on her day and ours. It concludes that key elements in the development of Palmer's religious sensibilities were her childhood in a pious Methodist household, her lengthy interior quest for religious certitude in the context of American revivalism, her exposure to the work of several "popular" Methodist writers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and the death of three of her six children in infancy or childhood.
These, together with American Methodism's fear during Palmer's early adulthood of losing its distinctive religious identity as expressed in its concept of Christian Perfection, helped to thrust Palmer into an unprecedented career as a female lay revivalist and outspoken champion of perfection. In this role she developed several distinctive "new measures" for carrying out her religious work and articulating her ideas.

Jesus came to save the lost, and Phoebe Palmer made it her business to make sure every life she touched had the opportunity to hear about and accept His precious gift.
A true disciple of Christ, she wholeheartedly believed that hers was to do the work of Him who sent her; a job she took very seriously. She is an example of just how God can use anyone who will surrender their all to Him in love, trust, and obedience. In a world where Holy examples are few and far between, it is a blessing to find this beacon of holiness from time past to light the way.
Phoebe Palmer lived a full Christian life in service to God. She has been credited with leading thousands, both in American and Abroad, to faith and holiness.
Looking at all she did in service to Christ would make many tired and discouraged, wondering how she was able to accomplish so much. An explanation for ability to persevere rests solely on the Holy Spirit.
Holiness is power, according to Phoebe Palmer and the Word of God. She believed the Lord empowered her to do His will because of her total consecration to Him and devotion to living a holy life. She is a strong example of one who practiced what she preached even unto death. Even in illness she held fast to her faith in God, not once voicing the complaints that would have been expected due to the pain of her illness.
